Quadracentifiable:
"the adjective stating that something is capable of being quadracentified or has undergone quadracentification."
adj. Quad-ra-cent-if-i-a-ble [quad-rah-sen-tiff-eye-a-buhl]
Quadracentification is the process by which an animal, insect or plant develops its limbs or processes in four equal parts to make up a total of 100 processes or limbs, hence the etymology of quadracent.
One such example of quadracentification is the rarely seen quadracentifiable caterpillar. Often mistaken for its distant relative the centipede, this native New Zealand larva has four distinct body sections, divided equally, cross laterally. Each section produces its own set of twenty five limbs during its second stage of development.
The quadracentifiable caterpillar and its metamorphosed equivalent - the quadracentifiable butterfly - are the only known living examples of quadracentification today. Learn more about quadracentifiable caterpillar history.
